as white dogs with black eyes
heave and pant

moss curls thickly
in cracked flagstones
along the rocky path

pen on paper,
a mockingbird's
brittle nest:
twigs and branches
in my tree near the window -
then the silence, once
the neighbor's motor
stops and I can hear
it's sweet song

This is my first small stone.
